Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro & Ultra Could Get a Major Display Upgrade with DC Dimming

Samsung Galaxy S27 series displays will hit mass production any day now. It may have already started if this leak is as credible as it looks. It seems the displays being made for the Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra have DC dimming support for the first time.

Well, it’s not like the older phones didn’t have dimming support in the first place. The Galaxy S26 Ultra, in fact, has typical PWM dimming. This will just be an upgrade over the existing tech. And it will be far better for people with sensitive eyes.

PWM dimming is actually Pulse Width Modulation, which has a higher flicker rate. The higher the PWM dimming, the less you’ll notice that flicker. We’ve seen some Chinese phones like the Honor 600 do 3840Hz PWM, so even at low brightness, the flickers are hard to catch and your eyes get less fatigued. Stay informed about Samsung smartphone prices in Pakistan with the latest listings in the Samsung Price List.

PWM does work, but it’s still far inferior to DC dimming. The flicker rate is lower by default on any OLED that supports it. Both technologies are meant for eye comfort at lower brightness levels. But DC dimming adjusts brightness by changing the amount of voltage supplied to the pixels.

We won’t bore you with more technical details. Just know that higher PWM dimming, like the one on the Honor 600, could be just as good as DC dimming. The latter is way harder to install on an OLED, though, on top of other features like variable refresh rate.

LTPO tech makes those flickers visible again even when you have dimming. Samsung will probably combine both for the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra. Upper brightness levels will use DC dimming, and the lower levels will switch to PWM. This tech might have something to do with the divide created among the ranks.

We’ve heard that the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra and S27 Pro get M16 OLEDs, but the base S27 and S27 Plus are stuck with M14+. Their M16 display is brighter and more color-accurate, with far better efficiency. We’ll add better eye comfort to the list of potential upgrades. Keep watching the news for more updates.
