Apple's iPhone lineup is allegedly primed for a RAM upgrade this year. A renowned Apple leaker recently took it to Twitter, claiming that iPhone 15 series will upgrade the RAM types to LPDDR5, and the next generation will take RAMs to LPDDR5X specification.
These RAM types sport different clock speeds, ready to pair with the next generation of Apple silicons. According to a report by ShrimpApplePro, Apple's A17 Bionic chip, destined for the iPhone 15 series, will team up with LPDDR5 RAM, while A18 Bionic will reserve LPDDR5X for the iPhone 16 line in 2024.
In addition to RAM upgrades, the tipster speculates SoC manufacturing process to upgrade in the years ahead of us. While the type of memory will not change, the iPhone 15 Pro will probably have 8GB of RAM instead of the current 6GB option found on iPhones 14 Pro and Pro Max.
In line with new rumors, TSMC's N3B process will power the A17 Bionic for the iPhone 15 Pro, while TSMC's enhanced 3nm process will power the A18 Bionic next year. These upgrades on the new iPhone model will later translate to better iOS multitasking, app activity in the background, and battery efficiency.
LPDDR5X is the latest standard of RAM throughout consumer electronics. The performance of LPDDR5X is 17% faster than LPDDR5, and the delay, while opening app time, gets reduced by 15%. It is well suited for 5G speeds, high-resolution AR/VR applications, and AI enhancements.
