Samsung Galaxy S22 to Leave out the Under-display Camera Once Again, Report Says

Rumor had it that Samsung would be introducing their next-gen under-display camera technology with the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. But the plans were scrapped because of production hiccups. Leaks that followed the S21 launch hinted that the invisible selfie camera would debut with the S22. A report out of Korea just dispelled that rumor.

The two-fold reason behind Samsung ditching the under-display camera is poor yield and poor image quality. The under-display cameras coming off the production line are defective more often than not, which means Samsung can’t use them for the millions of Samsung Galaxy S22 units that need to be shipped.

Image quality on par with modern standard cameras proves a challenge to replicate when the camera is hidden underneath the display. For now, it remains the key engineering hurdle for designing flagship displays free of unsightly notches and holes. At any rate, we might see the first under-display Samsung camera launch in the second of 2022.

While the UD camera on the new Samsung mobile phone is no longer in the cards, Samsung still has quite a few upgrades planned for the Galaxy S22 camera. For starters, Samsung partnered with the optics firm Olympus to create the Galaxy S22 camera.

Instead of using traditional lens-based image stabilization, the S22 will feature sensor-shift stabilization on the wide and telephoto cameras — much like iPhone 12 Pro models. The upcoming flagship series won’t hit stores until early 2022. We expect the Exynos 2200 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 895 chipsets to power the S22.
