The base iPhone 17 is $800, and at that price, you would expect at least 12GB RAM on a handset. But no, this model only has 8GB. The next version was supposed to fix that, but the iPhone 18 might not be as big an improvement as once believed. We’ve found some new details in a leak.
Disregard any rumors that you may have heard about the Apple iPhone 18 getting a 12GB RAM upgrade. Apple has other plans, apparently. Ming-Chi Kuo has been keeping an eye on the supply chain. He made more than a few discoveries and then generously gave up the details on X.
Most of the details pertain to RAM. They are late, but their Apple Intelligence promises are finally being honored on iOS 27. The software will have even deeper AI integration. So RAM has become a point of interest again on the iPhone 18 series, especially for the basic iPhone 18.
They will upgrade the RAM on the vanilla. But it’s actually just a 1 GB jump. They’ll use 1.5GB x 6 DRAM dies on the iPhone 18 for a total of 9GB RAM. This phone is built with an Apple A20 silicon at the center. The RAM upgrade means the onboard AI will have more legroom and the system won’t buckle under full load. There are, of course, three more models with the A20 Pro chip. Two Pros and one Ultra iPhone will grab 12GB RAM, same as always. They have 1.5GB x 8 dies for a total of 12GB RAM. The module count is basically unchanged. Anyway, the RAM’s only half the story.
We hear the Apple A20 silicon is moving to TSMC’s 2nm process node. That counts for at least 30% more power efficiency, and the CPU gets faster on the A20 silicon. It’s said that CPU performance is bumped by at least 15%, and there’s a better neural engine it can leverage for Apple Intelligence.
By the way, the launch is supposed to happen in September. They might not unveil the basic iPhone there, but the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are definitely coming on time.
