Honor Magic 8 Pro - An Impressive Smartphone by Honor!
As Honor unveils its Magic 8 Pro, a key selling point everybody is starting to see is a 200MP periscope telephoto placed on a massive 1/1.4-inch sensor. On paper, yes, it's a big deal. But digging into the specs reveals a rather odd decision. The main camera on the Honor Magic 8 Pro is actually a downgrade compared to the previous model. The aperture has gone from a variable f/1.4-2.0 to a fixed f/1.6, making the main sensor a third less sensitive to light. Honor says that the new AI features can easily compensate for that, but we have to check it out in detail to see if that's true. Let's start with what works: Honor Magic 8 Pro's telephoto camera is objectively excellent on paper. 200 megapixels on a 1/1.4-inch sensor, an f/2.6 periscope lens, and a 3.7x optical zoom (compared to 3x on the Magic 7 Pro). This is serious stuff. For context, most high-end smartphone telephoto lenses top out at 50-64 MP on much smaller sensors. On the contrary, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra relies on a 200MP wide-angle main sensor, backed by another 50MP ultra-wide, a 10MP 3x telephoto, and a 50MP 5x periscope. However, it's a larger sensor than a 1/1.3″ on Honor's Magic 8 Pro. As for the iPhone 17 Pro, it also "makes do" with 48 MP on its telephoto lens. With this type of generous sensor and high resolution, the Magic 8 Pro by Honor should theoretically excel at digital zoom (up to 10-15x without too much degradation). The periscope allows for true optical zoom without loss of quality, and the 200 MP allows for aggressive cropping without visible pixelation. The ultra-wide angle on Honor Magic 8 Pro remains identical to the previous model: 50 MP f/2.0 with macro mode. Nothing revolutionary, but solid and consistent with what we find in the high-end competition.
