Vivo X Fold, the phone maker’s first foldable flagship, has been making headlines for the past few days. Vivo had already kicked off its pre-launch campaign and announced the official release date. But ahead of the upcoming event, the first previews of the X Fold have been published on Vivo’s social media pages.
The marketing images show that the Vivo X Fold is modeled after the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold form factor. It folds in on itself like a book and switches to the external cover display for single-handed use. The main screen has an O-hole cutout off-center, and the tall and narrow cover display has one in the middle.
But the camera housing is the most striking element of this design. Note the oversized black plate accent that runs across the width of the casing. It contains a donut ring with four cameras arranged inside — three of these cameras have standard lenses, but the fourth is an advanced periscope-style telephoto shooter.
The official teaser campaign for Vivo's new X model also gives us some specifications for the foldable flagship. The main Vivo X Fold screen is an E5 AMOLED panel, hitting a sharp 2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Fold the device shut to reveal the 6.53” 1080P+120Hz secondary OLED screen. Both displays include hidden fingerprint scanners (a feature not seen in a foldable before.)
Vivo has presumably borrowed the hinge design from its sister brand Oppo, and it should help minimize the creases that inevitably form above the hinge. The optics system features 50MP wide, 48MP ultra-wide, 12MP 2x telephoto, and 8MP periscope-telephoto cameras.
Everything runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and a 4600 mAh battery. No word yet on the charging speeds. But you can expect up to 120W support for the Vivo X Fold since Vivo is not pulling any punches on the hardware. However, the pricing might be the deciding factor in the success of this debut foldable phone. You can pick from Crimson, Orange, and Blue colors. And 12GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB storage variants.
