Oppo Reno5 5G is Being Refreshed with a New Snapdragon Chip; The Ongoing Chipset Shortage Continues

The global rollout of Oppo's latest Reno5 series, which features the Reno5, Reno5 Pro+, and Oppo Reno5 Pro 5G, is currently underway. But Oppo is already refreshing the line with a new Reno5 edition. It has to do with the ongoing shortage of Qualcomm chips in the market.

Digital Chat Station, a trusted Chinese phone leaker, reports that the new Oppo Reno5 5G variant replaces the Snapdragon 765G in the current Reno5 5G with Snapdragon 750G. Save for the change of chipset, it’ll essentially be the same phone (perhaps even with a cheaper starting price.) The leaker says the shift was made because of the shortage of Snapdragon 765G chips.

Whether or not Oppo plans on discontinuing the 765G Reno5 model remains to be seen. However, Qualcomm has already warned about the increasing shortages. “The shortage in the semiconductor industry is across the board,” according to a Qualcomm executive. The decision won't impact the Pakistani market in any way as we being supplied with the 4G variant running on Snapdragon 720G.

The demand for chips in the auto and electronics industries is climbing, while the chip-makers are struggling to keep up. Qualcomm doesn’t manufacture their silicon. It’s outsourced to Asian semiconductor giants, so it’ll take a few months before the company can lose the supply constraints. Meanwhile, Oppo won’t be the last company to be affected by the shortage. we hope the situation doesn't translate into an increase in the Oppo price list.

For our readers out of the loop, the new Oppo Reno5 5G should offer comparable performance to the last variant. The 750G is newer and has a faster GPU, but the 765G uses a smaller 7nm fabrication process. A 4300 mAh battery backs up the internals, with support for 65W flash charging.

The screen is a 6.43” AMOLED that delivers a full HD resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. Oppo Reno5's display is flat and houses an in-display fingerprint reader. The camera system features a 64MP f/1.7 camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP macro lens,  and a 2MP depth sensor. Lastly, the selfie camera is 32MP.
