At the Galaxy Unpacked event in South Korea yesterday, tech giant Samsung tantalized the world with its latest innovations, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. Building on the success of their predecessors, both newcomers bring forth upgraded chassis and specifications, leaving enthusiasts in awe.

As usual, the smartphones are currently stuck in pre-order limbo, refusing to hit the brick-and-mortar stores for sale. The booking window for these devices opened yesterday, and the excitement will continue to mount until August 11th — the official date for their retail launch. Now, let’s have a closer look at their features.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

The first notable change with the Z Fold 5 is its new teardrop hinge. The improved hinge design allows the Fablet to close completely flat and lets users position the phone at any desired angle. Due to the clever mechanism, it now measures a mere 13.4mm in thickness when closed, slimmer than its predecessor's 14.2mm profile.

The Fold’s outer display features a 6.2-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2316x904 pixels and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. On the inside lies a stunning 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen boasting a resolution of 2176x1812 pixels, a peak brightness of 1,750 nits, and an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate.

While the camera system hasn't undergone significant upgrades, it maintains exceptional results. The rear setup includes a 50MP primary shooter, a 50MP wide-angle sensor, and a 10MP zoom camera. For selfies, the device offers a generous 10MP shooter on the cover screen and a 4MP hidden camera nested beneath the folding screen.

Powering the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy devices. The device retains its predecessor's 4,400mAh battery, supporting 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. Running on One UI 5.1.1, the Z Fold 5 introduces a redesigned taskbar and a two-handed drag-and-drop feature, enhancing multitasking capabilities.

Additionally, the S Pen for the foldable has now become 40% thinner. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is available for pre-order in select markets with Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream color options. As for pricing, the 256GB variant starts at 1,799 USD (~PKR 515,000) and goes as high as 2,159 USD (~PKR 619,000) for the 1TB option. The exact retail prices for Pakistan will be revealed later.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

The standout feature of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is its large 3.4-inch secondary super AMOLED display, aptly named the "Flex Window." Boasting a remarkable peak brightness of 1,600 nits and a refresh rate of 60Hz, this innovative screen, shaped like a folder icon, serves as a unique interactive hub.

As for the main display, the Flip 5 carries a tall 6.7-inch AMOLED with adaptable 120Hz and FHD+ resolution. The palm-sized foldable boasts Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor at the heart, clocked at an impressive 3.36GHz frequency. Paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage, it draws energy from a 3700mAh battery (rated for wired 25W input).

The camera setup on Z Flip 5 is equally impressive, featuring dual rear lenses: 12MP OIS-enabled primary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle shooter. On its front side lies a 10MP selfie snapper. Essentials include WiFi-6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, 5G, and side-facing biometric. Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender are the available colors for interested buyers, starting at 999 USD (~PKR 286,000) for the 256GB variant.
