Samsung was under pressure to make the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 thinner in the folded state. To shut the complainers once and for all, they made the chassis tighter, and now the Flip 8’s the thinnest clamshell phone on the market. Sadly, it’s the least upgraded model we’ve seen in years. These are the specs it launched with at Unpacked yesterday.
The body is now 6.1mm thin at the edge when it’s opened. But it closes down to a 13.1mm depth, which is still cumbersome. This newcomer has also shed 8g of weight, and now it’s just 180g or 6.35 oz. The new Z Flip 8 does have the same Aluminum frame and appearance.
They’ve put two cameras on the back. One is 50MP OIS, and the other is 12MP ultrawide, with the sensors virtually identical to last year’s Flip 7. The bending inner AMOLED has a 10MP selfie camera in the punch hole. Each camera will do 4K 60 FPS videos.
There’s relief for the US market because it’s among the few regions where the new Samsung Flip mobile is getting a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (for Galaxy) chip. Most other regions in the world will see a 2nm Exynos 2600 on the Flip 8. There’s some performance disparity between those two platforms.
Anyway, the screen on the inside is FHD+ 1080p 120Hz 6.9” 2x Super AMOLED. Z Flip 8 doesn’t upgrade the outer cover screen either. That’s still 4.1” 900p Super AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate. They might have upgraded the brightness, but no actual number was claimed on stage.
No big changes on the battery side. It’s capped at 4300mAh again, with endurance claimed at 31 hours (video playback). The Flip 8 does have the new One UI 9 and Android 17, and it will benefit from 7 years of OS/security updates.
There are two speakers on the phone (stereo sound). WiFi 7 is also supported on this newcomer. Of course, there’s a speedy and convenient fingerprint sensor on the side. 25W charging is supported through USB-C 3.2, which can also output Samsung Dex. The base Z Flip 8 has 12GB RAM/256GB storage, and it costs £1,149 (~PKR 427,000).
