Xiaomi Redmi 17 splits into 4G and 5G trims. And the latter splits further into a global and a Chinese version. Well, the one intended for China was just unveiled today, and it has a Unisoc T8300 SoC and a decent enough battery to last a day and a half. This is everything we have on the Chinese Redmi 17 5G.
A whole new design can be seen here. It doesn’t look anything like the purported Redmi 17 5G (global). The camera stack is different. This Chinese newcomer actually looks more like a Redmi A7 Pro. They even have the same screen, in fact.
Xiaomi latest Redmi mobile will cap the resolution at 720p, which is the only caveat. But the screen itself is a 6.9” display. It’s huge with a 120Hz refresh rate, and the brightness is supposed to hit 800 nits. By the way, this is just an IPS LCD with a notch and a chin on it.
Unisoc T8300 is the chip they used on the Redmi 17 5G in China, which is a 6nm platform, and the peak clock speed is only 2.2GHz. This does unlock 5G support on a phone. Redmi 17 5G only has 4GB or 6GB of RAM, LPDDR4X. But the storage is limited to 128GB, so that will limit your choices.
They do at least give you the option to put an SD card in. The storage does expand on the Redmi 17 5G. There’s no official durability rating for it. It’s best not to drop it in water. But there’s Wet Touch 2.0 support here. The screen won’t spiral out of control when it’s raining, or your hands are wet.
The battery on the Redmi 17 5G is 6300mAh. Average by today's standards, but still good enough to run a day and a half, but only if you are a light user. They actually tested this cell for 4 years of longevity. But the refills will be pretty slow. All it has is 15W charging support.
They did put an 8MP selfie snapper on the Redmi 17 5G. The rear main camera is a 13MP sensor. This is next to an auxiliary lens. There’s your trusty headphone jack. The fingerprint ID is on the side. The base price of Redmi 17 5G is actually just ~ $150 (~PKR 48,000) for the 4/128GB version.
