The very first phone in the world with LPDDR6 memory is actually a foldable. Xiaomi 18 Fold is supposed to carry the XRING O3 chip rather than a flagship SoC from Qualcomm, and they’ve been teasing CXMT’s first LPDDR6 RAM paired with that chip. Xiaomi 18 Fold is coming in September.
This wasn’t a leak, by the way. Xiaomi itself broke the news on Weibo. CEO Lei Jun congratulated CXMT for putting their LPDDR6 memory module into mass production. He said it’s a remarkable stepping stone. Of course, Xiaomi has its own interest in the memory since that’s going to be used with the XRING O3 chip.
We may be seeing more shared projects between CXMT and Xiaomi in the future as well. XRING O3 chip made its official debut on August 24th, so it’s not a complete secret. We had seen a few teasers saying the LPDDR6 memory is coming to the chip, and by extension the Xiaomi 18 Fold. Their new announcement puts a stamp on it. IT Home said that the new CXMT LPDDR6 module is a big upgrade from the LPDDR5X RAM in data transfers and architecture. A semi-annual report from CXMT did reveal some specs on this new type of memory.
12800Mbps is the official rated data transfer speed of this new LPDDR6, and a single module gets up to 16 GB capacity. Samples are already being tested by the customers, so this isn't just an in-house project anymore. It’s possible that they might ramp up mass production of LPDDR6 after that.
The whole reason for the faster memory is to make operations smoother on Android and make app opening a little faster. Of course, this new memory will also make AI more efficient. There’s no telling how fast this will actually make the Xiaomi 18 Fold, though. Lucky for us, its launch is right around the corner. We’ll know the rest of its details soon enough.
