This year’s Galaxy Z series had two Fold models. There’s now a passport-style Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 in the lineup that’s projected to sell more than its Z Fold 8 Ultra sibling. This is actually a wider, more compact foldable. It’s not as thin or lightweight as the Ultra. But it’s certainly built to last. This is what a new report says about its durability.
The wide 5.5” outer screen you see on the Z Fold 8 actually has a layer of Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. That’s the best you can get at this point from Corning. We’d go as far as to say it’s the holy grail of crack/scratch-resistant glass.
Cover screens are mature technology. And it’s the last thing to break on a foldable. It’s actually the inner folding screen that’s a constant source of anxiety for a foldable user. Well, the new Ultra and the baseline Z Fold 8 have Samsung’s new Flex Titanium display.
There’s a Titanium backplate right below the folding OLED. And then we have a titanium alloy substrate, which is a layer in the OLED itself. This will give structure to the display and make it more durable. But the best part is that it gets rid of the crease and makes it less visible. This is the first time they’ve got an official IP rating for dust safety on their Z Folds. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 was tested for IP4X and IPX8 ratings. The IP4 part’s actually for dust resistance. It’s better than having no official rating. But there’s still a risk of finer sand grains getting into the hinge.
Samsung didn’t say what material was used for the Z Fold 8’s body. Though the safest bet would be a Titanium hinge and Titanium frame. The same could be true for the Ultra version. The Flip 8 is the only one with an aluminum alloy body.
By the way, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is officially rated for 500,000 folds. This newcomer doesn’t have the same hinge as the Ultra. There’s no Flex mode here. So it either goes full flat or completely folds down with no static angles in between. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less durable than the Ultra. We are hoping to see a certain YouTuber do a teardown video and explore the phone’s insides soon. So keep an eye out for that.
