Samsung’s apparently working on a new Face Unlock tool. The feature may be named Polar ID v1.0. It should appear on the Galaxy S27 Ultra first. We hear this may be their most ambitious project. This could even beat Apple’s Face ID in execution. We have all the details here.
The leak is going viral on X. It reports that an early firmware build for the Galaxy S27 Ultra had information on something called a Polar ID v1.0. This was categorized under the Biometric security framework. It’s obviously some sort of Face Unlock feature.
The internal logs on the test firmware have confirmed that it’s a “polarized-light authentication system.” The leaker didn’t get into the specifics of how this technology works. We had to dig a little deeper. But don’t quote WhatMobile on these facts yet.
Of course, the usual front-camera approach is out the window for Samsung's Latest Ultra Model. They are testing dedicated Face recognition hardware. The components will emit polarized near-infrared light to map your facial features. If it’s sitting on the same light spectrum as Infrared, it wouldn’t be visible to our eyes.
The tech Samsung’s using to make this work is an ISOCELL Vizion sensor. That’s wired with a new BIO Fusion Core module. This Polar ID could bring the screen unlock time down to just 180ms. It should work in all lighting conditions.
You could even use it with sunglasses. It can scan your facial features behind the tinted glass. We usually see Face Unlock as a gimmick on Android. Sure, it’s fast, but not reliable. It isn’t really a biometric function, at least not on the same level as Apple Face ID for secure payments.
Samsung will change that in 2027. It’s just a concept, though. The company is merely experimenting right now, from what we’ve heard. There’s a long road ahead. 2027 is far, so take this news with a pinch of salt. We’ll let you know if there are any more updates on this story.
