Apple iPhone 17e May Undermine the Appeal of the Standard iPhone 17 for Many Buyers

iPhone 17e debuted a few days ago, and it’s priced way lower than the basic iPhone 17 at $600. We admit this newcomer has modest upgrades over last year’s iPhone 16e. But our perspective changed when we started comparing it to the vanilla iPhone 17. Here’s why the iPhone 17e could be a better value for most buyers.

Apple may have accidentally created a better value product that encroaches on the base $800 iPhone’s territory. They upgraded the iPhone 17e’s starter storage to 256GB. So they’ve essentially eliminated the biggest reason why buyers would move up the price ladder to consider the vanilla iPhone 17.

iPhone 17e also has the same high-end Apple A19 silicon as the standard iPhone 17, so there’s not a massive performance gap that will push you to a better option. These iPhones basically run at the same speeds. Yes, one GPU core is missing from the chip. But that hardly matters to the average user, who cares more about user experience than numbers.

iPhone 17e and base 17 share the same 8GB RAM, by the way. That makes it even harder to justify the $200 extra charge for the iPhone 17. And let’s not forget that these two versions have almost the same endurance and battery capacity as well. Based on the latest reports as of March 2026, the iPhone 17 rate list is here, which includes all models of the iPhone 17 series.

The flagship iPhones exclusively had MagSafe support for accessories. But the same MagSafe can now be found on the iPhone 17e as well. Apple was gatekeeping that feature to the standard iPhone trio last year. More people will definitely favor the budget iPhone 17e after this Mag Upgrade.

We are not saying the iPhone 17e is a perfect replacement for a lower price. But an average buyer would probably try to save money when there aren’t major trade-offs involved. iPhone 17e covers all the basics pretty well now, so there’s no practical benefit to pay extra and go for the higher-end iPhone 17.

The latter’s only worth it if you are looking for niche enthusiast features and a few quality-of-life improvements. iPhone 17 does have faster wired and wireless charging at 40W and 25W (respectively). iPhone 17e is still stuck at 25W wired and 15W wireless input.

iPhone 17 has a superior display as well. It’s brighter at 3000 nits peak, when the iPhone 17e is only 1200 nits. And yes, you’ll miss out on the Dynamic Island with the entry-level option. The vanilla iPhone 17 scored a 120Hz LTPO refresh rate this year, but the iPhone 17e is still stuck at 60Hz.

The iPhone 17 gives you an extra 48MP ultrawide camera and a better resolution 18MP selfie with Center Stage. People don’t usually care about the oddly placed camera button on the iPhone 17, but it’s absent on the iPhone 17e. These are the features you leave on the table if you go for the budget iPhone.

The $600 sibling is so well-rounded now that it’s harder to justify the $800 sticker for the base iPhone 17. It gets the same battery life and performance. It even has MagSafe and 256GB base storage. You do miss out on the extra camera, faster charging, and a brighter 120Hz display. We leave it up to you to decide whether the base iPhone 17 is really worth the extra $200 over the iPhone 17e.
