Apple iPhone 17e Could Reintroduce the Notch, But with a Thin-Bezel OLED Screen

A new iPhone 17e leak shatters all expectations about the alleged Dynamic Island upgrade we’ve been hearing about for several months. This report states that Apple may reuse the iPhone 14 display. That means the U-notch will make a comeback. The display itself might have slimmer bezels.

The company has apparently given BOE the contract to produce the majority of the iPhone 17e displays. The slack will be picked up by Samsung and LG, of course. The older iPhone 16e has a notch as well, and the front panel is the same one used on the iPhone 14: a 6.1” Retina OLED @60Hz.

We’ve been hearing rumors that a Dynamic Island is coming to the iPhone 17e, and maybe, this newcomer will borrow the screen from the iPhone 16 this time. That’s not what the new report claims. Sadly, this device might just be an iPhone 16e rehash with a few tweaks.

They do plan to thin the bezels, so the display looks somewhat relevant to the modern age. But the notch defeats the whole purpose. This is understandable, of course, as Dynamic Island is much harder to execute. That will require realignment of all the sensors, which could jack up the latest iPhone E model’s price.

If these details are accurate, it’s hard to see the appeal in iPhone 17e. It’s still a notched 6.1” OLED with Super Retina resolution and XDR. The screen is LTPS at least, so power efficiency is still one of its major advantages.

Beyond the display, there’s possibly a chipset upgrade on the way. iPhone 17e will surely have the same Apple A19 silicon as the standard iPhone 17. Center-stage feature is also a possibility, as they bump the front camera resolution to 18MP. It goes without saying that these are mere speculations.

Jeff Pu says an Apple N1 wireless chip will be added to iPhone 17e for more power efficiency and faster peer-to-peer file transfer speeds. This is all we have on the iPhone 17e so far. We’ll get back to you once we have more details. Keep watching the news for more stories.
