Honor’s the only company bold enough to put a rear screen on a budget phone. So we are not surprised. They did it with the Play 20A as well. Honor X5ds is a new phone from the same species, though it looks a bit more sophisticated. The Honor X5ds also has some internal upgrades.
They’ve put a standard 2.01” LCD on the back, and its resolution is 240 x 296px. This is intended for alerts and to pick up calls without unlocking the phone. Of course, it has a much better use. This is also a second viewfinder for your rear camera to take selfies.
Honor X5ds has a punch hole on the front display. It’s far less intrusive than the notch on the Play 20A. The screen size is a bit smaller, though. The newcomer is built around a 6.78” IPS LCD. This is a 120Hz panel at HD+ 720p resolution, so it’s not the sharpest display around. By the way, 600 nits is the rated maximum brightness on the new Honor X5ds. The company has put a 50MP main camera right next to the rear display. That’s an f/1.8 unit with 4x digital zoom. And this is supposed to record 1080p 30 FPS videos. The front camera is just a 5MP unit.
The performance actually comes from a Unisoc T610 chip, which is an eight-core platform at 1.8GHz. Sadly, that is ancient hardware. The company did account for the performance loss. That’s why they put the lightweight Android 16 Go OS inside the Honor X5ds.
They’ve put at least 4 Gigs of RAM on the phone, and the storage is capped at 64GB. There’s an SD card on the phone for up to 1TB of extra storage, and a chunk of your built-in space could be used as virtual memory (up to 4GB expansion).
The battery is larger than average. A 6000mAh battery keeps everything running. That’s more than enough juice for a full day of use. And the cell will refuel over a 15W wired input. Honor X5ds has an IP52 rating, and its power key has a fingerprint reader. ZAR 2,499 (~PKR 41,000) is the phone’s official base price in South Africa.
