Galaxy Z Fold 8 and iPhone Duo have the same size and format, but Samsung has had years to perfect its designs. Apple has done an amazing job leveling the playing field at first try, but the Duo is far from ideal. You’ll often hear iPhone Duo users complain about the size and weight. Next year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 will widen the gap to comical levels.

A leaker on X reports that Samsung is already working on a concept Galaxy Z Fold 9. And the newcomer will put next year’s iPhone Duo 2 to shame. Apparently, they want to make the Z Fold 9 even thinner and lighter than before.
@kro_roe on X reported that Samsung intends to drop the Fold’s thickness to 7.9 mm (folded). And the unfolded thickness might creep all the way down to just 3.9 mm. That’s the thinnest Samsung new Z model to date. Of course, we are talking about the concept design stages.

Nothing can be said with certainty until a prototype unit is made. So we are a little skeptical of this claim. And so should you. Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 9.7 mm profile when folded. And it’s only 4.5mm thick when it’s unfolded. This is just a little over the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra’s 8.9 mm and 4.1 mm measurements.
iPhone Duo is far behind either Galaxy Z Fold 8 model. Apple only got its thickness down to 5.2 mm (unfolded) and 11.3 mm (folded), which is almost 10% thicker than devices from Samsung. Even the weight is disturbingly high on the iPhone duo.

The Z Fold 8 is only 201 grams, and the Z Fold 8 Ultra clocked in at 215 grams. That’s not even in the ballpark of the iPhone Duo’s 254g weight. The phone’s chunky and hefty. All the complaints on Reddit about the iPhone’s weight and profile are well-founded.
Samsung wants to shave another 14% from the Z Fold 9’s thickness, and this will put comical levels of gap between the iPhone Duo. At this point, we don’t see Apple catching up to Samsung anytime soon, at least not on the design. Keep watching the news for more updates.
