Oppo A55s 5G is the newest entry in Oppo’s ever-growing catalog of budget-friendly 5G phones. It debuted in Japan, where it goes on sale next week. The 5G edition arrived right on the heels of the 4G Oppo A55, sharing a similar design and spec sheet. But it was a silent launch without so much as a press release, so it’s unclear when (or if) Oppo plans to bring the A55s 5G to more markets.

If you’ve seen the original Oppo A55, the A55s 5G would be readily recognizable. We’re looking at the same generic camera rectangle, chamfered back, and off-center hole punch cutout. Except now, the new sequel to the Oppo A53s comes in sleek mint and jet black finishes.

Oppo A55s 5G also offers a much-needed screen upgrade over the baseline Oppo A55. It refreshes at a responsive 90Hz and peaks at 1080P resolution (unlike the 60Hz, 720P screen on the Oppo A55.) Plus, the O-hole cutout holds an 8MP front camera.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset powers the phone. It’s built on an 8nm process node and outperforms every other chip in the 4-series. For this Oppo phone price range, the 64GB of internal storage feels underwhelming. But at least it’s expandable via an SD card. The camera system, featuring 13MP f/2.2 and 2MP lenses, is nothing to remark about either.

Everything runs on a 4000 mAh battery and 18W quick charging. Oppo A55s 5G is also IP rated against dust and water. 4GB of multitasking memory and the latest ColorOS 11 rounds off this setup.
