Apple files that leaked in June have been an absolute treasure trove of hidden information about the company’s products. Ever since the files got out, experts have been trying to decipher the lines, and well, someone has found proof that the Apple iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are using variable aperture main cameras.
There was a diagnostic log within those files that confirmed early predictions. The log is a solid lead on the variable aperture sensor that’s going to be used on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. NotebookCheck noted the details, hid the source, but gave an image of the log to back their claim.
The selected text in the image did connect the dots for us. We’ve been hearing about a variable aperture main camera ever since the iPhone 17 series came out last year. The diagnostic log is pretty much all the proof we need to make the case that a VA main camera is coming to the iPhone 18 Pro. And what’s more is that the company plans to put a new Sony outsole on the main lens. NotebookCheck has also predicted an IMX905 sensor. This is a nice little upgrade over the iPhone 17 Pro. Though it has the very same 1.22μm pixel size. Of course, variable aperture will change the equation.
We won’t bore you with the technical details. But know that the VA tech is only being applied to the main camera, because the telephoto and ultrawide sensors didn’t show any signs of change in the log. Even the LiDAR and selfie camera are the same as other older Pro models.
The whole smartphone industry is struggling with price hikes after the NAND and DRAM shortages. And Apple can’t stay immune to that forever. So this year’s Pro models will hit a huge $200 price hike. Consider this a heads-up if you were planning on upgrading this time.
