Huawei Mate 40 Modelled in Concept Renders Showcasing an Under-Display Front Camera

We’re still a few months away from an official reveal for the Huawei Mate 40, but that hasn’t deterred the rumor mill from periodically churning out speculated details surrounding the upcoming flagship. In a recent development, the alleged Mate 40 shines in a concept mockup that models the phone’s camera and display design.

You’re looking at a donut-shaped camera housing, with four cameras in the orbit of what appears to be a periscope module. This elaborate penta camera is flanked by a dual-LED flash on its left, suggesting a camera-focused build. The circular design is in part borrowed from its predecessor Huawei Mate 30 series. The shell itself has soft edges and roundings, seen in bright orange and pastel black colors.

Go around the front to find a display lacking either a notch or a punch-hole, which could point to a pop-up module, except the build is missing the pop-up camera as well. Could this mean that Huawei is experimenting with a commercial ‘under-the-display’ selfie camera, to compete with its main competitor, Samsung? The concept artist speculates so.

If these renders pan out, it would be a momentous step forward for Huawei, making the next-gen Mate 40 series the first Huawei phone to implement the novel invisible front camera technology. More to the point, this sequel won’t just entail an annual iterative specification bump over its predecessor series (which debuted with a wide wedge-style notch.) The display itself, of course, follows the look which is almost a staple for the Mate series now -- a front panel that melts into the side bezels, maximizing screen real-estate.

It goes without saying that these details are entirely predicated on the Mate 40 seen in the concept render being the finalized design (which hardly seems likely.) At any rate, Huawei does have some major upgrades in store for us, which should reveal themselves as the launch date nears.
