Apple iPhone Fold Tipped to Feature Liquid Metal Hinge for Better Durability

It’s late to the races, but Apple finally wants to release its own folding phone. They might call it the iPhone Fold. It’s supposed to be released later this year, and right now it’s on every leaker’s radar. Just today, we came across a leak about the iPhone Fold’s hinge mechanism and the material they might use for it.

The Naver blog poster @yeux1122 gave the internet an update about the new hinge system Apple is experimenting with. Apparently, they want to use Liquid Metal to craft the Fold’s hinge. The post says they’ve been experimenting with it for 15 years, so they probably know how this material will be helpful.

Liquid metal has niche applications, and it is sometimes used as a thermal solution inside laptops and PCs. It is a good thermal conductor. So it makes for a better replacement for thermal paste, albeit with a significant risk of damaging the components.

There’s a possibility that Apple might use liquid metal with a mold to create the hinge parts, but the leaker didn’t clarify it. Anyway, it’s said on the post that a liquid metal hinge could reduce stress at the folding points. So this will be one of the most durable hinges we’ve seen.

They want to use Titanium metal for the main body, which makes sense. This will make the iPhone's latest Fold model heavier, but at least it will be protected. This metal construction won’t be as heavy as the Titanium iPhones we’ve seen before.

The iPhone Fold will have its own dimensions. They aren’t going to follow the industry norms with an inner 7.76” screen and the other 5.49” cover display. This newcomer will remind you of the first Google Pixel Fold. That device had a wider aspect ratio, not taller like Samsung’s.

There’s also a chance that the Fold has two cameras on the back and a raised horizontal camera strip where they are both outfitted. The leaked renders show what this phone could really look like. The specs are a mystery for now, though. Keep watching the news for updates.
