New Vivo Zen Series Smartphone Patented Alongside an iPod Classic Analogue

To say that Vivo’s smartphone design language has become predictable would be an understatement. Whether it’s a flagship or a budget phone, Vivo designs rarely surprise. But the Chinese phone-maker is looking to shake things up soon, as hinted by two patents Vivo phones recently filed.

The first patent application filed with the Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration (or CNIPA) features a phone reminiscent of the early Apple iPods. We’re looking at a smallish display sitting atop a physical click wheel. Four buttons, designed for navigation, are embedded inside the wheel.

But note that while the iPod was meant simply for music playback, this quirky metal-frame product is a full-fledged smartphone. It’s unclear if this novel concept will ever see the light of the day. However, if Vivo has plans for its very own iPod analog, we should hear more in the coming weeks.

The other patent showcases a Zen branded Vivo smartphone. The last Zen was that came out in 2019 at a flagship Vivo mobile price. Its follow-up seems to be a lightweight and compact phone. Laid out inside a rectangular accent, we find a ring-shaped housing with a single camera.

The form factor and the design are different from any Vivo phone in recent history. But given there is no extra wide-angle camera, we speculate that the next Zen will be an entry-level device.
