Your phone is perhaps one of the most contaminated items you own. To give you a rough idea, each square inch of your smartphone’s screen has north of 25,000 bacteria. By comparison, a doorknob only has 8,000 germs per inch. And in the light of the recent Coronavirus pandemic, it’s important now more than ever to keep your phone germ-free. To help you, Samsung is offering to sanitize your device for free in 19 countries, including Pakistan.

In a post published on Samsung Pakistan’s official Facebook page, the company details that the ‘Galaxy Sanitizing Service’ is available in certain selected centers, and that you can find the nearest one by contacting their helpline. The service centers use UV-C light which can kill up to 99.9 percent germs in just 30 seconds.

Unlike harsh chemicals or abrasive fabrics that can scratch your phone or damage the phone’s smudge-preventing coat, a UV light treatment won’t affect your phone or its performance. However, if you try to clean it at home with a UV sanitization device, there’s no telling how effective the procedure will be.

If your phone needs repairing, or if you’re just stopping by their service center, Samsung will sanitize your Galaxy (or even non-Samsung smartphone) for free. Although other products like tablets, Galaxy Buds, and wearables aren’t as easy to contaminate, so your local Samsung center might not decontaminate them. Only a selected few handle these products and the process can take up to 3 minutes.

In related news, Samsung is taking an initiative to go green by recycling plastic bottles into protective cases for its latest Samsung Galaxy S20+. The plastic bottles are melted and spun into yarn, which is then woven into the fabric for the cases. A 500ml bottle produces enough yarn for two cases.
