Introduction
This document will help resolve the following symptoms:
  • The Check Print Cartridge light is blinking, and the Check Paper light is off.
  • The following message is displayed on the computer: The color [or black] print cartridge detected is the wrong type
This problem usually occurs after replacing a print cartridge.
NOTE: This information pertains to all countries/regions except China.
Solution
Follow the steps below to resolve the problem:
  1. Verify that the front panel overlay is installed correctly and reinstall if necessary. The front panel overlay must be installed or the all-in-one will not function correctly.
Figure 1: The front panel cover installed correctly
  2. Remove the print cartridges and verify that the part numbers are correct. The HP 28, 56, and 57 Inkjet print cartridges are supported by the all-in-one.
  3. Clean the print cartridge electrical contacts with a dry, clean cloth or cotton swab.
CAUTION: Do not clean the ink nozzles
Figure 2: Cleaning the print cartridge electrical contacts
1 - Ink nozzles (do not clean)
2 - Electrical contacts (to be cleaned)
  4. Reinsert the print cartridges and verify that they are installed correctly. The HP 57 or 28 tri-color print cartridge should be inserted into the left side of the print carriage; the HP 56 black print cartridge should be inserted into the right.

  5. If the problem recurs, remove and reinsert both print cartridges by following the process below:
    1. Remove both print cartridges.
    2. Disconnect the power cord, wait five seconds, and then plug in the power cord.
    3. After the all-in-one initializes, reinsert the print cartridges.
If the problem recurs, continue with the steps below.
  6. Remove the print cartridge indicated in the error message.
If the original print cartridge is available and still contains some ink, reinsert it - otherwise leave just one print cartridge in the all-in-one. The all-in-one will automatically enter reserve printing mode when only one print cartridge is inserted.
  7. Print a self-test page by pressing and holding Cancel, and then pressing Start Copy Color.
NOTE: If you cannot print the self-test page, download and install the HP PSC 1100/1200 Print Cartridge Utility from the HP Web site . If the error recurs, replace the print cartridge.
  8. On the self-test page, review the value for the MRGN field.
    • If the value of MRGN is 1, the print cartridge is defective. Replace the print cartridge.
    • If the MRGN value is 7, download and install the HP PSC 1100/1200 Print Cartridge Utility from the HP Web site to correct the problem. This occurs when the front panel overlay is not correctly installed when the all-in-one is first powered up.
